“Health is wealth-” A simple phrase yet one of the most profound truths humanity has ever known. Today, as we mark World Health Day, we are reminded that health is not a luxury. It is not optional. It is the very foundation upon which our lives are built.

Brief History

World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7th, established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about global health challenges and inspire action toward better health for all. Each year carries a theme and this year’s message is clear and urgent: “Together for Health: Stand with Science.” This is more than a slogan, it is a call to unity, responsibility, and truth.

What Is Health, really?

Health is often misunderstood as simply not being sick. But according to the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease. This means your health is not just about hospital visits or medications. It is about your mind, your environment, your relationships and your daily choices.

Why It Matters More Than Ever

Next to life itself, health is the greatest gift you possess. Without it, dreams are delayed, productivity declines and joy becomes harder to access. But with it, you can build a career, serve your family, grow spiritually, and pursue purpose with strength and clarity. Health is not just survival, it is the ability to truly live.

Together Means Everyone

This year’s theme reminds us that health is a shared responsibility. It is not just the doctor’s job, not just the government’s duty, and not just a personal choice. It is all of us working together.

What You Can Do (Starting Today)

Eat intentionally — Your body reflects what you feed it.

Move your body — Exercise is not punishment; it is preservation.

Rest without guilt — Your body heals when you pause.

Listen to your body — Pain and fatigue are signals, not inconveniences.

Avoid self medication — Not every symptom needs guesswork.

Protect your peace — Mental health is health.

Build healthy relationships — Community is medicine too.

In a country like Nigeria, where the healthcare system faces real challenges, prevention is not just better than cure—it is often safer.

The Role of Government and Society

Health cannot thrive in neglect. Policies must protect people: clean environments, safe water, accessible healthcare and strong public health systems. A healthy population is not an accident. It is the result of intentional leadership and collective accountability.

Final Reflection

Health is not something to think about only when it is lost. It is something to protect daily, consciously and collectively. Today is not just about awareness. It is about decision: To choose better habits, to respect science, to care for one another, to value life enough to protect it because in the end, when health is gone, everything else pauses. But when health is preserved, anything is possible.
