Forty-eight years ago, the world witnessed a remarkable medical breakthrough. After nine years of infertility, Lesley and John Brown welcomed Louise Brown—the world’s first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). What once seemed impossible became reality through the pioneering work of Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards, opening a new chapter in reproductive medicine.
Today, more than 8 million babies have been born through IVF worldwide, transforming what was once considered a miracle into a source of hope for millions of individuals and couples facing infertility.
IVF is an assisted reproductive technology in which an egg is fertilized by sperm in a laboratory. Once fertilization occurs and the embryo develops, it is transferred into the woman’s uterus, where it may implant and grow into a healthy pregnancy.
Like many medical treatments, IVF does not guarantee success. One of the most important factors influencing its success is maternal age. Younger women generally have higher success rates because both the quantity and quality of eggs decline with age. However, several other factors—including sperm quality, embryo quality, the cause of infertility, and overall health—also contribute to the outcome.
While awareness of IVF has increased, access remains a significant challenge. For many families, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the cost of treatment is simply beyond reach. As a result, a technology that offers hope is still inaccessible to countless people who need it most.
This raises an important question: Is hope truly hope if only a few can afford it?
As we celebrate World IVF Day, we should not only honour the scientific innovation that has changed millions of lives but also advocate for a future where fertility care is more affordable, equitable, and accessible.
Every individual or couple experiencing infertility deserves the opportunity to explore safe, evidence-based options for building a family. Because hope should never be a privilege, it should be a possibility.
