At some point during my residency training I became burnt out and discouraged. I felt lonely and detached as well, so I decided to search for support and encouragement online. During my search I came across many great women support groups locally and internationally, some were for women in medicine and many others were career leadership groups, but none addressed my peculiar situation, as a female doctor in Nigeria. They could not understand my unique West African residency journey, practicing medicine in Nigeria, or mentoring me in the career path I desired. I wanted support, a nurturing community, mentorship, authentic relationships with successful friendly consultants and access to more opportunities to leverage and thrive. After unsuccessfully trying to fit in, I decided to stop bringing my chair to these tables, built my own table with so many free chairs and now i’m inviting young ambitious, restless, female physicians who want mentorship, clarity or want to be part of a support community.
Why try to navigate the difficult medical terrain all by your self? The misogyny? The resource poor environment?Aggressive patients? The sense of uncertainty? The pressure to quit or relocate? Fear of offending the chiefs and trainers? Poor access to mentors in specialties you desire? Dealing with the workplace pressure? Your mental and physical wellness? Flourishing outside medicine? Seeking opportunities for relevance and impact? Work life integration? Fun and slay without fear or guilt?
I love quality connections and community building and I’m also passionate about impacting women. I want to help my colleagues have a better experience and together we support the cause of women in medicine.
